ROADTRIP :: NYC 2 MUSEUMS 3 EXHIBITIONS 1 Amazing Day....

Catalog for the show

PART I :: THE AMERICAN FOLK ART MUSEUM:
Today was the last day of my spring break, and I was determined spend at least one day this week doing something special for myself. WOW! What a day it turned out to be... We originally traveled to NYC just to see the Folk Couture Show at the American Folk Art Museum. The museum allowed several selected clothing designers to look through their collections to find work that they could use to inspire the making of a garment. The premise of the show:

  • Fashion has always found inspiration in unpredictable sources: art, life, history—there are no boundaries. In this spirit, the American Folk Art Museum explores the relationship between inspiration and creation. Thirteen established and emerging designers have created original ensembles inspired by artwork in the museum’s collection.

I think the most thrilling dress for me was the above hand quilted nylon, raw silk  mesh, cotton fiber, and Japanese bamboo yarn dress Angus Dame by Fabio Costa. It was inspired by the weathered religious carving behind the head, and the "Tree of Life" white work quilt to the left of the center image.

Equally impressive was the above "Gown"  by Koos van den Akker. It is inspired by five works from the museum's collection, including the above "Woman In Veil."  An embellished cotton collage dress, who's surface is entirely covered with sewn sequins, giving it the appearance of having a thin plastic layer.

The above lace dress was made to mimic the intricately cut paper sheet next to it. Even up close the paper has the appearance of fine old lace - simply AMAZING...

There is lots more to see, but I must run on to the second part of my on day vacation. Which was much to my surprise - equally amazing...

PART II ::  MAD ~ MUSEUM OF ART and DESIGN:
In the late afternoon we headed down Broadway on foot to Columbus Circle to the Museum of Art and Design  primarily to see the Fashion Jewelry Collection of Barbara Berger (an interesting back story all her own). Her collection is massive and incredible. The below images represent just a sprinkling from the exhibit...

Breath taking Mother of Pearl and Rhinestone brooch

At tantalizing as this vintage costumed jeweled collection was - and make no mistake, it was jaw dropping! (My mother Esther, a collector of more than 3,000 pieces of costume jewels herself, would have had to be pried from the building at closing time by security, if she were still with us). The surprising show was one we almost missed, dismissing it as probably more boring digital imaging design. In reality the exhibit "Out of Hand, Materializing the Postdigital" is a most mesmerizing look into the future of 3-d printing.

On display in the show are everything from tiny action figures to architectural elements to a massive sculpted marble table. The marble table like the ceramics bronze and stainless steal items were all created by ground powered of the particular material coupled with a bounding agent synthesized in the production process... I can only say if you are anywhere in the vicinity, this exhibit is a show stopper. A palette of imaginative play well worth the trip.

May I temp you with some of my favorites? Just a little tease of the dozens of objected in the show all made from 3-d printing....

We finished the day on the top floor of MAD... in the very relaxing Robert Restaurant overlooking Columbus Circle and Central Park... I am grateful today for quality time with good friends.

Central Park West at Columbus Circle

Whenever I decided to be exhausted, and feel sorry for my knees or back, I just looked ahead to the shuffling feet of my friend Liz (c l) twenty years my senior, and the oldest of our group at 80 who always has to periodically stop until we catch up to her.

Robert Restaurant looks enchantingly uptown via Broadway...
